Elazığ Press History: Uluova Newspaper, Turan Newspaper, Yeni Harput Newspaper, Elazığ Newspaper Example

Abstract

The function of the press in social, economic, cultural and political enlightenment gained importance with the introduction of state control with Takvim-i Vekayi in 1831. Mamuretü'l-Aziz, the first newspaper of Elazığ, was published in 1883. Later, this process continued with various newspapers such as Şark Gazetesi in 1918, Satvet-i Milliye in 1922 and Turan in 1931.

The Military Coup of 27 May 1960, one of the most important issues in the history of the national and local press, was an important turning point that left deep traces in Turkey's political and social life. In this process, issues such as freedom of the press and censorship revealed the complex structure of power-press relations. The 27 May Military Coup was greeted with great excitement in Elazığ as in every corner of the country. Newspapers, which were among the most important communication tools of the period for the public to receive news, played an important role in this process. The military administration made all post-coup announcements through newspapers and radio.

The main purpose of this article is to examine the press history of four local newspapers published in Elazığ during the 27 May 1960 Military Coup. The focal point of the study is the publication life of Turan, Elazığ, Yeni Harput and Uluova newspapers. The basic features of the newspapers such as their first publication dates, owners and logos are discussed.
